Amazon Claims Alexa Users Now Have Access to Over 12,000 Skills

Amazon India on Tuesday announced that it has added over 1,000 skills to the Alexa skills store since the launch of Echo Apparatus and Alexa store in India on October 31.

This takes the total amount of skills available for Indian clients to 12,000. This translates to (on an average) one new Alexa ability added every 90 minute, Amazon says. The new skills span 20 categories, such as Health, Business & Finance, News, and way of life.

Within 60 days of Alexa’s official release in India, Amazon claims to have added 1,000 new Alexa skills for Echo users from the country. At launch, the store had approximately 11,000 skills accessible – most notably offered by developers such as Ted Talks, Saavn, ESPNCricinfo, and Zomato. Amazon asserts that Alexa’s natural language understanding and AWS cloud support allow it to constantly learn more skills readily.

To enable a skill, users may go in the Alexa app and navigate for skills, and click Enable to activate the abilities on their apparatus. Otherwise, users may directly ask Alexa by saying “Alexa, empower ” to enable it. It’s also available for desktop browsers.

The highlighted skills in the new rollout include Ambient Sounds – Ocean Sounds in Music & Audio, interactive games such as Rock Paper Scissors, schooling skills such as Merriam-Webster Word of the Day, the Help me Sleep wellness ability, in Addition to Hanuman Chalisa and Inspire Me at Lifestyle category.

The Alexa group has been also been hosting programmer workshops in cities from India to engage with the country’s developer community.
